“What you give a child or what you put in their body is exactly what we become. So the more garbage you put in there, the more you’re going to look like a garbage disposal.”
— California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
What a great line; it’s as if the writers of “The Terminator” are still working for Gov. Schwarzenegger. Despite the constant mixed messages the California governor sends out, at least this one, which ran in the Los Angeles Times, I can agree with. Schwarzenegger made the comments while attending his annual fitness fair in Ohio.
“I think we should use our vending machines in the schools – fill them with good food, with fresh vegetables, with milk and products that are really healthy for the body,” he says at the event.
While this comes from a governor who reneges on his own education funding deals, his influence as a role model can’t be ignored. At a time when the obesity epidemic is ruining our children’s health and harming their education, at least this flawed role model is pushing for the removal of junk food from California schools.
It’s just unfortunate that the governor isn’t taking a stronger stance against taking steroids, which he’s admitted to during his body building years. Instead, he gives this lukewarm warning, according to the Times:
“We did take steroids, but when we took it, it was a new thing that came on the market. We were not aware of all the side effects it could potentially cause,” Schwarzenegger said. “And we were not aware where it’s going to go, from steroids to growth hormones, and really be very destructive for the bodies.”
Now, he told her, “we have to do everything we can today” to prevent steroid use.
But then, that’s the Terminator for you: a positive and negative role model for children at all times.
