DadTalk and the Terrible …
No Good, Very Bad Day
I wake early Monday morning due to Lael and Seth fussing, and I can’t get back to sleep even though I’ve been fighting a cold all week.
It is going to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
The drive to work sucks yet again.
Already, it is a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
I discover a coding problem involving a recent project. Everyone is now upset.
More signs it is going to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
The restaurant I wanted to get food at was too busy. Instead I had to eat at Panda Express. Blech. Yuck. Jeesh is their food awful.
Now my stomach thinks it is a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
I call my wife at the end of lunch. She tells me a boy in preschool slapped him in the face. (So much for this post.) While telling me the story, Seth wakes up the baby, who starts crying. Wife has to hang up phone.
Oh yeah, it is a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
Despite heavy traffic, I get home early.
Maybe today won’t be such a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day after all.
My son and I get into the car to rent SpongeBob SquarePants the movie. Seth’s leg gets pinched by the buckle on the new car seat and he bursts into tears from the pain.
We’re back to it being a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
After the movie, it’s clear Seth, my wife and Lael all are coming down with my Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad cold.
And that means we’re going to have a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night.
The baby barfs all over my wife while I’m trying to put Seth to sleep.
More proof a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night is coming.
Seth wakes up three times – and me with him – within an hour of going to sleep. It takes over an hour to get him back to sleep.
It’s getting to be a really Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night.
An unusual Southern Californian thunder and lightning storm wakes everyone up repeatedly.
Man, this night really sucks. Wait, I mean it’s an incredibly Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night.
Baby wakes up mom and dad repeatedly.
My mind and body are Terribly numb this Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night.
Baby wakes up again at 3 a.m. and needs her diaper changed. Thunder and lightning make it most difficult to get back to sleep. My adrenaline is pumping full speed, so here I am writing this post instead of sleeping.
Actually, it has been a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad WEEK.
Our new neighbor’s car alarm went off AGAIN and the baby is fussing AGAIN.
Let me put that more succinctly: It’s been a @$#$%%!!! WEEK.
Good night.
My apologies to Judith Viorst, who wrote the most excellent children’s book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
Definitely not a good way to start your week. I hope the rest of the week goes more smoothly! As for Seth's new carseat...which one did you end up getting?

AHH! The joys of fatherhood. I thought I'd provide some kind words for you to soften your THNGVB Week...
Just wanted to say that I love what you do here at the site. Your last two posts are indicative of why I come here from time to time.
You share stories with which we can empathize, or simply enjoy. Then you craft a well written essay about societal ills from the unmistakable position of a father who is concerned for the future of his beloved children.
Bravo! I don't know how you manage to keep up with the site, but, I for one, am glad you do.

Grace: Indeed not an auspicious start. Actually, the new car seat is destined for Lael when she outgrows the infant one, but I put it in our second car for temporary convenience. Seth knows he's just "borrowing it."
I think it's an Eddie Bauer, but it has a different strapsystem then our older one. The problem with this new one is the buckle is soooo low you have to kind of guess what's happening when you push the buckle in.
Pat: My gosh, thank you so much. I needed a boost like that today. Sounds like our kids have the same age spread but my kids are lagging behind yours by a little more than a year in total age.
As to how I have time to write: Seems in my old age I get up at 5:30 a.m. most days now, which gives me about an hour or two some mornings to write. Usually it works, but there are times I can't write for days on end.

oh man, that sucks! Wish you could just stop by for a beer or two. Well, just keep remembering that all of this will one day be a fond memory over which you will be able to laugh...

Thanks. By the way, I agree that chocolate makes it better; I have some to start every day. ... How's life in Australia?
