by Rosemary Wells
Touted by the publisher as a perfect first gift from a parent to a child, Carry Me! is a book of three poems – “Carry Me!” “Talk to Me!” and “Sing to Me!” – meant to evoke some of childhood’s earliest experiences.
Carry me up the stairs and down.
Hold me while you get dressed for town
... Twirl me away in the evening air.
Fall asleep with me in your chair.
The gentle poetry is accompanied by heartwarming pastel-hued illustrations of a happy baby bunny dancing with Mommy, cuddling with Daddy, laughing, playing, learning, singing, while always basking in his parents’ devotion. Every child should be loved this much.
It’s no surprise that Wells has so deftly captured universal themes of very young children. The award-winning author and illustrator of more than 50 children’s books, including the “Max and Ruby” series, Yoko and Friends, and Emily’s First 100 Days of School, is a master at producing charming stories that speak to children about their own experiences.
