A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine l'Engle. I was captivated by her books as a pre-teen. (or anything by l'Engle!)

Alternately, The Sky Is Falling by Kit Pearson (or, again, anything by Kit Pearson). Fascinating look at the lives of children affected by WWII.

There are so many wonderful books for pre-teens, it's hard to suggest just one!
