I dread explaining war to my children. It's such a shame to reveal to innocent kids just how brutish humans are.

Hm. I haven't read this -- usually review YA but normally love Lee & Low books -- but I take your point. Simplistic, sentimentalism sometimes misses the point, even for older children, and it's not any better for little ones. Gosh, it's all so complicated... you hate to even have to talk about war with little kids.

I agree with both of you: talking about war with kids sucks, but at some point *shudder* it's going to come up. I guess I had mixed feelings about whether this is the right book to address it.
