Aw, shoot. I'd love to have seen a good book on the subject. I was a bit of a rockhound as a child. There was a area in my hometown where you could go chisel off fossils; of course now, it's very protected.

"Rocks in His Head," by Carol Otis Hearst, is a good one. It's the real life story of her dad, who was a lifelong rock collector, in picture-book form, with illustrations by James Stevenson.
